Boot2Desk adds free Firefox ESR enterprise deployment support.
Effective today, every Boot2Desk build can ship with a fully managed Firefox ESR configuration — at no cost. The generator now writes a system-wide policies.json to /etc/firefox/policies/, the standard location Mozilla documents for Linux enterprise deployments[reference:0]. Administrators can force-install extensions such as uBlock Origin and NoScript, lock the homepage, and deploy managed bookmarks without writing a single line of configuration by hand.
The feature follows Mozilla’s public enterprise policy model, which supports independent deployment of policies via policies.json alongside the browser[reference:1]. Boot2Desk wraps that model in a guided workflow: the chat assistant validates every extension ID (email-style or GUID), builds the JSON, and embeds it in the generated build script. There is no separate licensing tier, no per-seat fee and no vendor account required. The same build script that hardens the operating system also configures the browser.
“Enterprise browser management should not be a paid add-on,” said Mykolas Lundqvist, founder of Boot2Desk. “The policies are public. The file format is public. What organisations need is a reproducible way to apply them to an ephemeral system — and that is what we are shipping today.”

Boot2Desk publishes its carbon-aware AI architecture and green computing roadmap.
Two days ago we published the technical details behind the Boot2Desk chat assistant’s carbon-aware design. The assistant does not run a large language model at request time. Every answer is pregenerated at build time and served as static content, so the runtime cost of a conversation is effectively zero inference. The only compute that matters is the periodic regeneration of the answer set — and that job is scheduled to run when the local electricity grid is cleanest, between 02:00 and 06:00.
The approach is a direct application of carbon-aware computing: shifting deferrable workloads to windows with a higher share of low-carbon generation[reference:2]. Boot2Desk is not unique in applying the idea, but it is unusual for a security tool to publish both the schedule and the reasoning. The full write-up is available at carbonaware.boot2desk.com.
The announcement also covers the broader green-tech direction of the project: a RAM-only operating system that leaves no persistent state reduces the need for storage, backup and long-lived endpoint management — three of the largest sources of embodied and operational carbon in enterprise IT. The team is careful not to overstate the claim. Boot2Desk is a smaller attack surface and a lighter footprint, not a carbon-neutral product.
